Biography

Charles was born in 1863 in Kilmany, Fife, Scotland, the fourth of seven children of Charles McIntosh and Margaret Pratt.[1] His father was a builder[2] and stone mason.[3]

Charles was a golf-club maker. He married Williamina Morren in 1890 in Leith South.[2] Her mother had died four years earlier and because her father was a marine engineer and worked aboard ships, she was caring for her two younger sisters, Janet and Margaret. They appear in the household along with Charles and Williamina in the 1891 census when they lived in a flat at 7 Hermitage Terrace, Leith.

Shortly after the census was taken, Charles and Williamina had the first of their six children, Charles, born in 1891 in Leith.[4] Barbara was born in 1893.[5] Sometime between 1893 and 1895, the young family (including Margaret) moved to Bridge of Weir in Renfrewshire, close to the Ranfurly Castle Golf Club that had opened in 1889 to great success. Their next four children were born in Bridge of Weir: Williamina in 1895; Margaret (1897); William (1900); and Isobel (1905). By 1911, Charles Jr is working as a cotton broker and the family is living at "The Neuk", Bridge of Weir.

In 1921, Charles' wife Williamina dies of a cerebral hemorrhage and nephritis. The family are still living at The Neuk.

Charles died of a coronary embolism in 1942 at the age of 78. He was still living in Bridge of Weir, at 2 St George’s Terrace, and his death registration noted him as Golf Professional (Retired). His death occurred on Lawnmarnock Road which runs alongside the “Old Course” of the Ranfurly Golf Club and was not very far from his residence. His daughter Isobel was the informant and was also living at the same address. [6]
