Biography
Hector McKay was born about 1826 in Scotland. His parents were John McKay (B1788) and mother unknown and came from the Isle of Skye or Eigg in Scotland. When immigrating to New Zealand his mother did not come with the family so presume died prior to 1840.
In 1840 he came to New Zealand into Port Nicholson, Wellington on the ship Blenheim with his father and siblings as: John McKay Snr 52 (1788); John McKay Jnr 28 (1812); Donald 25 (1815); Sarah 19 (1821); Lachlan 16 (1824); Hector 14 (1826) and Colin 10 (1830) [1]. Hector is shown as a cowherd.
Hector married Margaret Hayhurst in 1857 in New Zealand and they had eight children: 2 sons and 6 daughters [2].
He passed away after 1869 and before 1920 (as his wife's death notice in 1920 states that he was her late husband), estimated from his last child's birth date.

- 1860-1864, Unknown name, born at Greenhayes Estate, Temuka
- 1861 Alice, also born Greenhayes, Temuka. Note that Mary also born 1861 so possibly twins? Mary was registered as 1861/306.
- 1867 Alice, D 27 Jul 1947. No birth or death records.
- 1874, Arthur. D 1874 aged 4 months could be 1874/4371.

Gina (Stapleton) McMaster
McKay-7405 and McKay-1217 appear to represent the same person because: Hector McKay married Margaret Hayhurst in 1957 in New Zealand. He came to NZ in 1840 on the ship Blenheim . My family line goes through the McKay line - Catherine Amelia McKay who married Alexander Dunn.
