Biography

John was born in March 1861 near Stawell, Victoria.

He is the son of Nathaniel McKay and Mary Wilson.

John McKay married Ann Gibson in 1885. ^[1] The couple had three adult sons and three adult daughters. The eldest son, William, had drowned when young. The family lived at "Lumeah".

He served his apprecticeship to general storekeeping with Messrs Robertson and McIntosh, Colac, and in 1877 managed an insolvent estate at Rochester; after which he was an accountant in the Australasian and European Bank, Mitiamo, for eighteen months. In 1883 for five years, he then took charge of Mr. R. F. Dyke's store at the Sandhills, Terricks.

In 1885, with his brother, Mr Sam McKay, who later became manager of Hugh V. McKay and Co., he established a general merchandising business at Pyramid Hill with over a dozen employees, which he conducted until the Pyramid Co-operative Society was formed in 1918.

In 1915, he established a general store at Leitchville.

Mr John McKay had varied business interests in several Victorian country towns. In later years, however, his health failed, and he retained only a timber mill at Leitchville. ^[2]

At the time of his death in 1936 aged 76 y.o. , his family comprised a widow, three remaining sons, one of whom was Melbourne Sales manager for the Vacuum Oil Company, and two remaining daughters. ^[3]

His funeral took place at Pyramid Hill cemetery. The service at the grave was conducted by members of the Plymouth Brethren.
