Thanks very much for this information, Janice. My direct ancestor was Joseph Elias McKay, son of Rev. Samuel McKay. My information is that Joseph Elias McKay was born circa 1811 and that his mother was Elizabeth Bell Jasper. However, your information would make it more likely that his mother was Martha McCauley. Do you have any information about the children of Samuel and Martha that could clear this up?
Considering that Rev. Samuel Price McKay was a Methodist minister, divorce seems highly unlikely. Martha Caroline McCauley significantly outlived Elizabeth Bell Jasper. Therefore, it seems almost certain that Elizabeth Bell Jasper was Samuel McKay's first wife and after her death in 1818, he remarried Martha Caroline McCauley (after 1818). Given the ages of the children, it would be a reasonable assumption that he married Elizabeth Bell Jasper ca. 1799 (given oldest child, Elijah Bond McKay was born December 1801). After Elizabeth died in 1818, he would have married Martha McCauley sometime between 1818 and late 1820, in time for the birth of John McKay in October 1821. The marriage date of 4 June 1808 to Martha McCauley listed above just doesn't pass the logic test.
Samuel McKay married Martha McCauley about 4 June 1808 (dated of marriage bond), in Maury Co., Tennessee. (Bond online at FamilySearch and Ancestry.)
Looks like they need someone to adopt (and clean up) this record. Would you be willing to do so?
