Biography

Murdoch was born about 1847. He was the son of Donald McKay and Christian Martin. He married Mary Smith of Baile an Truiseil in the late 1870s and they had 9 children together in the parish of Barvas. He passed away after 1919.[1][2]

Bill Lawson, Croft History Isle of Lewis, Vol. 19, Bill Lawson Publications, Northton, Harris, 2010 (Contains histories of Upper Shader and Baile an Truiseil). P.135- Initially Murdo and his wife Mary lived at split croft 14/15 in Baile an Truiseil and later moved to Croft #1 there in the late 1880s. p.110 p. 84 shows that Murdo switched his croft at #1 to move to 21a Upper Shader. Entries show his wife to be Mary Smith, b. 1852 and their children with birth years are listed.

  1. His last appearance in the Scottish census is in 1901 under Mkay, Murdo living at 21b Upper Shader, Barvas, Ross and Cromarty with his wife Mary and 7 children, census accessed at the pay site Ancestry.com
