Biography

John was born in 1872.[1] He was the son of Angus McKay and Maria Good and was born shortly after his parents arrived in Manitoba. He spent his first few years in Portage la Prairie and then on a homestead near Minnedosa, Manitoba. John and his parents moved to Dunseith, North Dakota bout 1885 where they started homesteading near the town. John married Kate Fay McLeod[2] and had 10 children with her. John farmed a small homestead in Hillside township, Rolette, North Dakota and the family lived in Dunseith while the children went to school. John had a blacksmith business there. He and his wife moved to Canada in 1910, living initially with Kate's father in Kennedy, Saskatchewan where John established a blacksmith business in nearby Langbank. Shortly after that, about 1912, they moved to Radville, Saskatchewan and John continued to work as a blacksmith. He remained in Radville until his mother Maria died in 1939 and then moved north to join sons who lived near Belbutte, Saskatchewan. He had a blacksmith business at Bapaume, Saskatchewan for a time and then moved to Belbutte where some family lived. He passed away in 1961.[3]
