John was born in 1849. He was the son of Angus McKay and Christina Nicolson.

In the 1861 census John (age 10), Scholar, was the son of Angus Mckay in Alterwall, Bower, Caithness.^[1]

John married Ann Campbell on 27 May 1873 in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland.^[2]

In the 1891 census John (age 39), Farmer, was the head of household in Achagui, Halkirk, Caithness.^[3]

He passed away in 1931^[4]
