William "Willie" G. McKay was born about 1875 in Texas.[1][2] He married Emma Lee Johnson on 4 April 1901 in Pecos County, Texas.[1]
It is likely he died before 1904, when Emma remarried, but after 1902 when Emma gave birth to Raymond. Emma passed away in 1905, so by 1910, his son Raymond was living with Emma's mother Annie Riggs.
Raymond's wife, Ermine spoke of the father-in-law she never met, saying that "Willie" was a literal cowboy, herding cattle. She said that he had died of galloping consumption (tuberculosis) in New Mexico, shortly after Raymond's birth.
One possible connection is William McKay, born about 1877, who comes from a family of cattlemen, and is believed to have died in Carlsbad, NM. That William McKay's uncle, Daniel Webster McKay also lived in Pecos County in 1900. His father, brother, and another uncle all owned land and cattle in Guadalupe County, 1875.[3] Pecos County in 1900 was dominated by the growth of cattle and sheep ranching. Stage coaches and cattlemen met at crossroads in Pecos County, including a railroad from the town of Pecos to Carlsbad. William is only documented in the 1880 census, where he was enumerated with his parents. Undocumented family tradition states that he died in Carlsbad, Eddy, New Mexico. It is possible that this William McKay is the same man as William G. McKay.
