Alexander was born in 1813. He was the son of Neil McKay and Mary Montgomery.

He came to the US on the Gleaner with his parents and siblings in 1842. [1]

They were one of the early families at the Scottish Settlement at Argyle in Illinois.

He married Janet Ralston. They had one child, Margaret, born in 1867.

He passed away in 1878.
