Note:
When those first brave pioneers came to Leeburn, it wasimmediately necessary to put up a dwelling. These buildings were generally log cabins. As they settled in, many beautiful homes wereconstructed. They were usually two storydwellings and made by local skilled craftsmen using the finest woods availableat the time.
One of those homes was built by George McKay around1910. It boasted an indoor bathroomcomplete with a toilet, sink and tub, not something that was common at thattime. These conveniences were available though power generated from a windmill,a novelty in this part of Algoma. It pumped water from a well situated between thegarage and the house into holding tanks both in the house and in the barn. A hand pump on the main floor was used tobring the water to the upstairs of the house.
As the blades of the windmill were put in motion by thewind, the main shaft of the windmill would pump up and down. Bob Black, a nephew of George McKay’s,recalls how he used to cling to this shaft and enjoy a little ride.
A generator was used to provide electricity to the homeuntil the depression years in the 1930’s when it was no longer of practicaluse. Electrical power came to the areain 1945.
