Biography

James was born around 1806 in Ireland [1], but moved to Cumberland, England by the end of the 1820s, where he had a family.

Marriage and children: He married Sarah Haughan on 10th November 1827 at St Kentigern's (St Mungo's) church, Bromfield, Cumberland [2] [3]; it was the first marriage for both [4]. They had five children baptised in Bromfield: Margaret, baptised 13th July 1828; Jane, baptised on 25th December 1829; John, baptised 16th October 1831; "William McKay", baptised 25th December 1833; and "James Mc Kay", baptised 9th April 1837 [5]. The baptism records all record James' profession as "Mason" or "Stone Mason"; and the first four give the family's residence as Crookdake (a distributed hamlet near Wigton) while the last places them at Lowrow (midway between Crookdake - of which it might be a part - and Bromfield).

1841 census: Living in New Houses, Bolton, Wigton, Cumberland [6].

1851 census: He was apparently working (as a builder and railway contractor) away from his wife and youngest children, who were recorded in Wellington Terrace, Berwick Upon Tweed [7]. (James has not yet been found in England, Wales or Scotland, despite searches on FamilySearch, Ancestry and FindMyPast.)

Death: It appears he died on 7th February 1858, with probate being granted exactly four months later, and Sarah McKay being a linked person [8]. Another probate record records his residence town as Cardew, which is close to Dalston [7]. Note:

Research Notes

  • Many sources are given for him in FamilySearch [8]
  • I have ordered a copy of a possible death registration for James, in 1847 in Wigton (COL668044/2023). - Probably not him; a 37-year-old chaise driver.
  • I have also ordered a copy of the 1858 death registration in Carlisle, which names him as James McKie. - Probably not him - a cotton weaver.
  • There's a possible death record for James's son James in 1884, in Wigton - the ages match [9].
  • There are many records that might relate to him - and his family - on FamilySearch [10]; e.g., Sarah b 1838, Catherine b 1841; Margaret marrying James Cubley in 1846; James (with a photo in his bio) marrying Ann Graham Hudson in 1869.
