Sarah Ann McKay was born on 12th December 1847 in Wetheral, Carlisle, to "Jane McKay", a single mother; no father is named on her registration [1].
Birth registration for Sarah Ann McKay |
1851 census: The best-fitting record I have found places Sarah and her - now married - mother in Wetheral, Carlisle, Cumberland [2]. (Note: Her stepfather James Purvis was only about 5 miles away at this time, though is listed as single in his census return. I have not found any documentation of this marriage, suggesting it may have been a "border marriage".)

1861 census: Living at 3 Vints Buildings, Causey Bank, All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne [3]. (Notes: 1. Surname mistranscribed as "Parves" in FindMyPast; 2. From an extensive search, this was the only family found with a William {~Purvis or ~Dixon} of about the right age and place of birth, near either his birthplace or his later biography; 3. Wiglaw does not exist, which is a real shame as I'd love to know where she's from! Perhaps Wigton? 4. There is a photo of Causey Bank from 1967 here [6].)

Marriage & children: George Milburn married Sarah Ann Purvis on the 2nd November 1868 at All Saints' parish church, Newcastle upon Tyne, by banns [4] [5]. He is stated to be 26, a bachelor and a pitman, living on Stepney Terrace, the son of Robert Milburn (deceased), a pitman; she is stated to be 19, a spinster also living on Stepney Terrace, daughter of James Purvis (deceased), a husbandman. Both signed the register, and witnesses were Joseph Wright and James Wilson. The following Milburn births were registered with the mother's maiden name Purvis:
1871 census: The only likely record found for her (though her birthplace is wrong) is from Heddon on the Wall Castle Ward, Northumberland [13]. It has 'George Milburne' as 32, coal miner, born in Allendale, Northumberland; and 'Sarah do', 22, born in Bywell, Northumberland; there is no-one else in the household. (The census was taken on 2nd April, before Hannah's birth.)
Death: She died in, or soon after, giving birth to Sarah Hannah. Both were buried on 16th August 1877 in Mickley, Northumberland [14] [15]. Sarah Ann Milburn's death, at the reported age of 28, was registered in Hexham, Northumberland in Q3 1877 [16]
