John William McKellar was born in Norfolk about 1842. According to the 1851 and 1861 censuses, he was born in "Wells, Norfolk" (presumably Wells-next-the-Sea), but the 1881 census lists his birthplace as "Clay, Norfolk" (presumably Cley next the Sea). In any case, his birth was registered in Walsingham, Norfolk in the second quarter of 1842[1].
At the time of the 1851 England and Wales Census, John, Elizabeth, John, and Margaret Ann were listed as living in Tormoham, Devon[2].
At the time of the 1861 England and Wales Census, John, Elizabeth, John W, Margaret, and Elizabeth Mckellar were listed as living in Tormoham[3]. At time of the census, John's occupation was listed as "Carpenter".
John's marriage to Mary Pugsley was registered in Newton Abbot, Devon in the first quarter of 1864[4].
John formed a partnership with Thomas Blacklock in Torquay, doing business as Blacklock and McKellar. Apparently, things did not go well, as John emporarily did business as a grocer and tea dealer, and went bankrupt on 14 July 1870[5].
At the time of the 1881 England and Wales Census, John W, Mary, William A, and Florence M Mc Kellar were listed as living in Tormoham With Torquay, Devon, along with a servant[6]. At the time of the census, John's occupation was listed as "Builder Employing 12 Men 2 Boys".
At the time of the 1891 England and Wales Census, John Wm, Mary, and Florence M Mckellar were listed as living in Tormoham[7]. At the time of the census, John's occupation was listed as "Builder & Contractor".
