Biography
James McCowan was born about 1802 in Ballygawley, Tyrone, Ireland to William McCown and Elizabeth Smith.
He came to New Zealand in the steamer Westmeath in 1883, accompanied by his wife and chldren in Hawkes Bay[1] and was listed as a Farmer of County Tyrone age 70.
He was a member of the EdenDerry Lodge at some stage as that is listed in his funeral notice[2].
He died on 3 January 1889 in Waikomiti, Auckland, New Zealand[3] and was buried at Avondale Cemetery, Auckland on 5 Jan 1889.
