John was the eldest son and second child of William and Hannah. He was born in Metal Township, Pennsylvania in 1779. He married Mary ____. As the eldest heir, upon the death of his father he inherited "the real estate, stone house, log barn, 2 tenements". He later sold these to Richard Childerstone.
A family account indicates that "James and John McKibben moved near Pittsburgh to a town called Cross Keys" (should be Cross Creek). See image at right.
John is found in the 1810 Census (mis-scribed as John McHibben at Archives.gov) living in Metal Township, on land immediately adjacent to that of his brother William, with a household of two young children - a boy and a girl - as well as two females between the age of 16 and 25 - surely one of them his wife Mary.
He is also seen in the 1814 Pennsylvania census living in Lurgan, Franklin County.
The 1820 Census is less clear. There is a John McKibben in Toby, Armstrong, PA; one in West Pennsboro, Cumberland, PA, and others (with some spelling variations) in Ohio, Maryland, and New York.
The 1830 Census is even more difficult to disambiguate.
So far, his death date and place is unknown.
The 1786 Pennsylvania Septennial Census shows a John, Samuel, and Thomas McKibben at Hopewell, Washington County.
The 1800 Pennsylvania Septennial Census shows one John, a farmer, at Lurgan; and a different John, also a farmer, at Cross Creek. Also at Cross Creek are James, Samual, William - all farmers - and Sarah (listed as a widow).
The 1807 Pennsylvania Septennial Census shows one John, at Lurgan. Also shows a William McKibbon (sic), innkeeper, at Metal, and a William McKibbon (sic), farmer, at Metal. Also shows a George Wagoner and Jacob Wagoner, farmers at Metal (could these be Nancy's father and brother?)
The 1814 Pennsylvania Septennial Census shows three John McKibbens - first at page 196, then at page 206, and last at page 219. All three list occupation farmer. The first two appear to be duplicates: all of the preceding and following names match. These are listed under the location Lurgan. The third entry is different, and is listed under the location Metal.
A record from the Cumberland County Historical Society shows a marriage between John McKibben and Isabella Mitchell dated May 3, 1814 (married by Joshua Williams), but it is not clear which John this may have been.
