Biography

Margaret was born about 1870 in South Carolina. Her mother was owned and worked on a plantation in Edgefield County, SC where she was enslaved along with her father.
US Black Heritage Project
Margaret (McKie) Greene is a part of US Black heritage.

After Slavery ending in 1865 [1] in the 1880s we find Margaret in Edisto Island, SC with her father, mother and siblings. [2] I am unsure what was going on during slavery, so the LNAB is in question. In the 1900s Margaret is now married with children and living in Name in Schultz, SC. [3] Sometime between 1901 and 1910 the family migrated south settling in Augusta, GA. [4] It is unclear at this time when Mr. Bohler passed away, however Margaret is now a widow. In the 1920s we find Margaret still living in Augusta, GA as widow. [5] Sometime after the 1920 enumeration Margaret married Mr. Greene before she was interviewed by the WPA.

Margaret passed away in 1942 and was laid to rest at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Augusta, GA. [6]

Interview

Margaret was interviewed by Margret Johnson sometime in 1937 at her residence in Augusta, Georgia as part of the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The results are presented in narrative form, most, allegedly, in the first person, and made available by the Library of Congress. [7]

Marse Cookes son was a doctor, she replied, and he 'tenied anybody who was bad sick- Granny Phoebe was the midwife at our plantashun and she birthed all the babies. She Was old when I was a little gal, and she lived to be 105. Marse Cooke never let any of his slaves do heavy work 'till dey wuz 18 years old. Margret's father went to the war with "Marse Cooke" as his body servant, and her mother went also, to cook for him!

To tell you the truth, man, said the old woman, I member more 'bout that war back yonder than I member 'bout the way we had a few years ago.

The total interview and be read here page 64.
