Biography

Hugh (McKillip) McCaleb was part of a Southern Pioneer Family.
Hugh (McKillip) McCaleb was born in Appalachia, in North Carolina.

Hugh White (McKillip) McCaleb, born about 1780. was the son of Andrew W. McKillip and Elizabeth (Lowrey) McKillip of Stokes County, North Carolina. Both his father and his grandfather, Hugh J. McKillip served in the Revolutionary War and are recognized by the Sons of the American Revolution.[1] [2]

Hugh White McCaleb and Elizabeth Holbrook were married on August 13, 1803 in Stokes County, North Carolina.[3] They had seven children of their ten children while they lived in North Carolina.[4] Elizabeth was was the daughter of James Holbrook, one of the Executors of J. Hugh McKillip's will in 1802.

Cemetery survey records indicate he lived 1798 ? 1886 with a question mark. Grave marker indicates he lived 1798 - 1880. It is believed, and census records indicate, that he most likely lived 1805 - 1886.
  4. Barbara McCaleb (1810-1846) m. Thomas Lauderdale (1810-1855)
  5. J. Andrew McCaleb (1813-1899) m. Leah Catherine McCollum (1821-1885)

His grandmother, Isobel (Isabelle White) Lowery, mentioned Hugh White in her will, dated 11 Dec 1809 and probated in 1812.[5] He was also mentioned in his father Andrew's will in 1810.[6]

Hugh White and his young family lived in Stokes County until about 1817, when they moved to Logan County, Kentucky, where Hugh signed a Power of Attorney in the sale of land he inherited from his father to his brother-in-law, Michael Fair in 1818. From there, they moved on to Lauderdale County, Tennessee and by 1825 were living in Morgan County, Alabama. After a few years the family moved to the area that is now Fayette and Marion counties. The 1830 United States Federal Census has Hugh White and his family living in Marion County, Alabama:

He obtained a land patent in Fayette County in 1834 and spent the rest of his life there.[8][9] Hugh was a farmer and built the first grist mill in Fayette County.[10]
