John was born about 1720 in Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland. He arrived in Philadelphia in August of the year 1744, and made his way down to South Carolina; thence his posterity moved through Georgia and west. His parents emigrated from Inverness, Scotland on account of Oliver Cromwell' reign in England (American Ancestry, Volume 9).

John McKinley died about 1771. His probate took place in Charleston County, South Carolina. John wrote his will 17 Oct 1771 and it was proven 3 Dec 1771.[1] Probate inventory[2]
