Born 15 April 1823 in Monroe Co., Mississippi to Collin McKinney and Permelia Ann McMickens. Ellen Jane McKinney was the first daughter of Collin McKinney. Ellen lost her mother due to child birth with her younger brother. Ellen married Elijah Anderson Bates on 01 March 1838 at Archibald, Franklin Co., Alabama which was not far from her father Collin McKinney's farm. Ellen and her husband resided on the McKinney farm from 1838 til 1846 when the McKinney Clan migrated to Texas to join up with the 3 oldest sons of Collin McKinney. The migration went from Alabama thru Mississippi and Arkansas as documented by the 1850 US Federal Census and the birth record of their son Finis Carroll Bates in 1851. The McKinney clan joined up in 1853 in Birdville, Tarrant County, Texas. The Clan eventually migrated to Uvalde County Texas as documented by the 1860 US Federal Census. Ellen and Elijah had a total of 10 children (6 Sons and 4 daughters) Ellen lost her husband in 1893. She lived til 12 July 1906 passing away in Batesville, Zavala Co., Texas

Ellen Jane Bates was enumerated at Uvalde, Texas Post Office, Uvalde County, Texas for the September 22, United States Census, 1870. She was noted as born 1820-1821 in Alabama and keeping house as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are male Elijah A Bates, male Finus C Bates, male Bayless A Bates, female Mary E Bates, male Jose Angel and female Divitas Garcia.[1]
Ellen Jane McKinney Bates is buried at Edgewood-Woodlawn Cemetery in Batesville, Zavala County, Texas.[2]
