He enlisted in the Civil War and served with the 14th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. The family is in possession of Mahershal's photo album from that time. Many of the people in the photo album are unidentified.

He married(2) Catherine Waldren 2 January 1868 in Jefferson Co., Indiana. ^[5]Mahershal testified in his military pension record that he married Catherine Waldren 22 December 1867 in Preble Co., Ohio.
