He enlisted in the Civil War and served with the 14th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. The family is in possession of Mahershal's photo album from that time. Many of the people in the photo album are unidentified.
He married(2) Catherine Waldren 2 January 1868 in Jefferson Co., Indiana.

He died 20 July 1922 in Columbus, Ohio.[13] He is buried in Union Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.[14]
