Richard, son of Alexander McLachlan and Mary Ann Naysmith.
He attended Waio-karaka school in Thames.
Richard never settled in New Zealand and left to become a Seaman.
On 20 August 1910 at Bedford, MA, he married a widow, Clara Sylvia Lemos of Boston, Massachusetts. Richard was 46 and Clara 37.
Clara Gertrude was the daughter of Samuel and Annie Lemos. She married Francisco Silva (Slyvia).in 1893 in Bedford, MA. By 1900 Clara was living in the family home again. Francisco Silva (Sylvia) was the son of Francisco Brown and Isabel Silva. He was employed as a Glass Blower at the time of his marriage to Clara.
Richard continued working as a Seaman and in 1912 was serving aboard the ship Germania sailing from the Azores to New York.
He died in 1919, aged about 57.
Clara never remarried and remained in Bedford where she died in 1942.
