Lachlan McLachlan is a member of Clan MacLachlan.

Born around 1847 in Ardnamurchan, Lachlan ("Lacky") was the third child and eldest son of of Donald McLachlan and Janet (McKinnon) McLachlan[1].

In his early twenties, possibly before, Lachlan left Ardnamurchan and went to the pretty Island of Cumbrae in the Clyde estuary, opposite Largs. He worked there on the east side of the island, at Balloch Martin Farm as a resident farm labourer, and it was at Cumbrae that he met his wife-to-be Marion MacPherson. Similarly, Marion had also left her home in Barra, Outer Hebrides and was living and working at Figgatoch Farm on the western side of Cumbrae. The couple married at the Manse (church) on 28 May 1877, Lachlan aged 24 and Marion aged 21[2].

Soon afterwards, the couple moved to Marion's home island of Barra, and their first son John was born in Kentangaval (street) in Castlebay in the April of the following year. In total, the couple were to have nine children. Since their first and third children were born in Barra in 1878 and 1882; their second in Ardnamurchan in 1880 and their fourth on the island of Kerrera in 1884, it is apparent that the family moved around quite a bit. By 1887, the family had settled in Oban, which is where their latter five children were born[3]. Throughout these times and moves, Lachlan worked variously as a farm labourer, ploughman, carter and later coal merchant. With the advent of the Caledonian Railway and improved communications and ferry services, Oban grew rapidly to become the "Gateway to the Isles" and a favoured holiday destination, attracting migrant families from the Isles and West Coast seeking work and opportunities.

Unfortunately, Lachlan died of "Tubercular Meningitis" on 28 Apr 1900 at Lorn Combination Poor House in Oban, Argyllshire[4][5].
