George McLaren was born in the parish of Monikie on 28th June 1812. The parish record reads; "James McLaren and Jean Ogilvie his spouse in Greystone, had a son named George."

At the time of his marriage on 17th June 1837, George had moved into the parish of Inverarity, he was a forester and almost 25 years old. The record reads; "George McLaren and Helen Mitchell, both of this parish desired proclamation in order of marriage, 2nd Sab."
Two years before their marriage, in 1835 the parish was described as;
"The church was built in 1745. Crops mostly oats, barley and wheat. The nearest market town is Forfar 4 miles distant. A turnpike road from Forfar to Dundee passes through the parish for 4 miles. Two public coaches travel on the road daily, one from Aberdeen to Edinburgh the other Brechin to Dundee. There are two schools, the parish and the private, the fees are from 2/- to 10/6 per quarter. There are no persons from 6 to 15 who cannot read."
The family lived at Gallowfauld up until the time of his death in 1876 and they had a total of thirteen children.
