Capt. G.D. McLauchlan is Honorary Colonel of the Grey Regiment
Appointment Effective Last May Confirmed by Official Orders -- Popular Officer -- Has Long Service Record, Starting as Private Soldier
"To be Honorary Colonel of the Grey Regiment, Capt. Geo. D. McLauchlan, V.D., dating from May 1, 1929."
The above sentence appeared in official military orders issued at Ottawa on Monday, October 7th, an announcement which will be received with much pleasure and satisfaction, as it means that Capt. Geo. D. McLauchlan, of this city, has had his excellent and long military services recognized by the Department of National Defence at Ottawa in his appointment as Honorary Colonel of the Grey Regiment.
Not only will this appointment be well received by his fellow citizens generally, but it will be particularly pleasing to the officers and men of the Grey Regiment, they being the ones who are aware of the great interest Capt. McLauchlan has taken in the welfare of the Regiment, especially in recent years, and the hearty congratulations of the entire community will be extended to the new Honorary Colonel on his appointment.
Enlisted as Private
For a great many years, in fact ever since he was a lad, Capt. McLauchlan has been interested in military matters and he is one of those who has come up through the ranks to his present high position. He first enlisted as a private in the Regiment and later became physical instructor, afterwards commanding one of the companies, always taking a keen interest and being very thorough in his work. On the outbreak of the great war, Capt. McLauchlan enlisted in Owen Sound and went overseas with a [unreadable] from the 20th Battalion of Toronto, and served throughout the [unreadable] of the war with that [unreadable] rendered excellent service. For some considerable time he was the Paymaster of the Battalion. Previous to the war, however, in 1910, he went to England with the Canadian contingent which attended the coronation of King George. He possesses a number of decorations, among them being his officer's decoration. Long service medal, Mons Star, several service medals, Victory medal and Coronation medal, and his work has frequently been recognized by important appointments.
Unanimous Choice
Capt. McLauchlan was the unanimous choice of the officers of the Grey Regiment for the position of Honorary Colonel at the annual meeting held in May last, and they are all quite delighted that his appointment to the position has been ratified by the Department of National Defence. His interest in the affairs of the Regiment has fully justified the choice and he will no doubt display even greater interest in its affairs than ever before.
In addition to his military affiliations, Capt. McLauchlan has been one of the foremost citizens of Owen Sound. He was one of the members of the well known firm of James McLauchlan and Sons, and retained an active part in the business management up to time of its amalgamation with the National Grocers. His advice and counsel on many important matters relating to the welfare of the city has been frequently sought, and he has also taken a kindly interest in the affairs of the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League, and was the first President of the owen Sound Post after the amalgamation of the several soldier's organizations throughout the country. He is a member of Owen Sound Golf and Country Club and of the Owen Sound Kiwanis Club, and is still financially interested in a number of the business enterprises of the city.
Other Appointments
Other orders affecting the Grey Regiment confirm the appointment of R.C. Ferguson, of Thornbury as the Commander of the Regiment and also his pomotion [sic] from Major to Lieutenant-Colonel, while Lieutenant T.J. Rutherford, late Officer Commanding the Regiment, is transferred and appointed to command the Second Reserve Battalion, Grey Regiment.

McLauchlan -- George Dillane: at his home 507 10th Street West, Owen Sound; on Thursday morning October 12, 1967, George Dillane McLauchlan, son of the late James and Hetty McLauchlan. The late Mr. McLauchlan will be resting at the Breckenridge-Ashcroft Funeral Home, after 7 o'clock Thursday evening, where the funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Interment Greenwood Cemetery.
