Biography

John was born 1860 in Saint John, New Brunswick. He was the son of Daniel McLaughlin and Sarah Harkins. He had several siblings, including an older brother, John, who died at age 5 shortly before he was born. Thus there were 2 sons named John. John was baptised at St Peter's Catholic Church in the North End of Saint John. He worked as a cooper.

John was married twice. His marriage registration to Lizzie Anderson lists him as a widower.

The first wife may have been named Ellen, although her maiden name is unknown. Believe she died in childbirth and that they had one son, named John after his father.

The 1891 census has evidence that after the death of his first wife he shared a home with his sister, Susan who was also widowed and his brother, Joseph. There were 2 young boys - John (age 3) and Walter (age 8) Walter was Susan's son and I believe John was John's son. Brother Michael McLaughlin lived in the next dwelling.

John and Lizzie lived in the Milford and Randolph areas of Lancaster, NB - now part of Saint John. They had 7 children. Lizzie died when she was only 34 leaving John widowed again with young children. His Anderson in-laws become very involved in helping to raise these children.

John passed away in 1923 at the age of 63 and was buried in St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Saint John, NB

(Note: Mother given as Susan Doherty. Informant was Daniel McLaughlan, his son. John's mother was actually Sarah Harkins. Sarah had a sister, Cecilia, who married Patrick Doherty. It is likely that Daniel confused Doherty for his grandmother's maiden name)
