Biography

Helen McLellan was born in 1833 in Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland, as the fourth child and second daughter of Alexander McLellan and Agnes Gall.

On Tuesday, December 12, 1854, Helen married James Short (1833–1856), son of William Short and Janet Simpson, in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Helen and James were the parents of two children:

The register entry also informs us that groom James lived at Rumford; his father was weaver Alexander McLellan (deceased) and his mother was Agnes McLellan, formerly Gall. Furthermore, bride Helen lived at Rumford; her father was miner George Hunter (deceased) and her mother was Agnes Hunter, formerly McKay. Minister William Begg, performed the ceremony, witnessed by Allan Begg and James Hunter. The marriage was reported in Falkirk on Tuesday, May 5, 1863, to .

1864 - Death of Mother: Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland. [13]
Helen's mother, Agnes McLellan died on Monday, November 7, 1864, at Douglas, at the age of sixty-four, according to her Parish of Douglas in the County of Lanark death register entry. The entry also states that she was married to cotton weaver Alexander McLellan; her father was Archibald Gall (deceased), a farmer; her mother was Janet Muir (deceased); and she died of a rupture of the heart. The death was reported to registrar James Scott on Sunday, November 20, 1864, in Douglas by son John McLellan .
  • Archibald Gall is noted by the record as Agnes's reputed father. The death record has an associated entry in the Register of Corrected Entries.

Furthermore, the entry names her mother as Helen Short, formerly McLellan, a washerwoman. Mother Helen McLellan reported the birth to registrar James Scott on Friday, January 25, 1867, in Douglas
  • A note in the margin of the birth entry states that a court decree had determined the child's paternity and refers to the Lanark Court Judgement naming the father

1868 - Paternity Suit: Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. [15]
On July 27, 1868, the Lanark Sheriff Court heard Helen's case, in which she claimed that John Inglis, a mason from Douglas, was the father of his daughter Janet McLellan. When John fails to appear in court to defend himself, the court considers him to have confessed to being the father. The court ordered John to pay Helen's expenses of £1 11s 6d as well as maintenance of £5 per year until Janet McLellan reaches the age of ten. The court also orders John to pay the court's costs of £3 3s 8d and a further 6s for the issuance of the decree.

1869 - Death of Father: Armadale, Linlithgowshire, Scotland. [16]
Helen's father, Alexander McLellan died on Saturday, May 22, 1869, at Lauriston Land, at the age of seventy-two, according to his District of Armadale in the County of Linlithgow death register entry. The entry also states that he was married to Agnes Gall; he was a carrier; his father was John McLellan (deceased), a carrier; his mother was Mary McLellan (deceased), formerly Scott; and he died of many degenerations. The death was reported to registrar John McDonald on Saturday, May 22, 1869, in Armadale by son James McLellan, who was present at the time of death.

The entry also states that she was married to mason (journeyman) John Whitefield; her father was Alexander McLellan (deceased), a general labourer; her mother was Jeannie McLellan, formerly Gall; she died of heart disease (mitral); her illness lasted 9 months; and her death was certified by James Ritchie, surgeon. The death was reported to registrar Thomas Hillier on Thursday, September 11, 1879, in Muirkirk by husband John Whitefield, who was present at the time of death.
