Hugh Davis McLellan was born on 24 January 1805 in Gorham, Maine. His parents were Alexander McLellan and Chloe (Davis) McLellan.
He married Elizabeth (Lewis) Staples on 25 December 1833 in Gorham.
Hugh was a prominent member of the town of Gorham, and authored a book on its history and genealogy before his death. He was chairman of the board of selectmen from 1842 to 1843, and represented Gorham for three years in the Legislature. He served as Speaker of the House in 1847 and 1848. He was also an active member of the militia, achieving the rank of Colonel at age twenty-four.
Hugh passed away on 9 December 1878 in Gorham and is buried in Eastern Cemetery.
