Source: #S212 Page: The Richmond County Times Data: Text: The Passing of "Mr. Joe"On Wednesday, February 11th at twilight, Mr. Joseph Eugene McLelland quietly passed away at his home in Hephzibah after a lengthy illness. "Mr. Joe" as he was called by most of his friends, was one of Hephzibah's oldest citizens. He was born in Burke County July 26th, 1875 but lived here most of his life. He was a member of the Hephzibah Baptist Church. He was graduated from the Hephzibah High School in 1898 and for several years taught in Richmond, Burke and Bryan Counties. He became a Master Mason in 1903 and was elected secretary of Richmond Lodge 412 F&AM the same year, serving in that position until his retirement in 1956, due to declining health. He rarely missed a meeting during those 53 years and his fellow members spoke of "Brother Joe" as truly a Master Mason. He was presented with a 50-year Masonic pin by the Grand Secretary of Georgia Masons, Daniel W. Lockler and on his retirement he was honored with a dinner which was attended by the members of his family, the members of Richmond Lodge, many outstanding Masons of Augusta and B.L. Amon, Grand Master of Georgia. He was also given a handsome leather chair, equipped with an adjustable back and foot rest, which provided him with much comfort, especially during his illness the past few months. His wife, who was Miss Beulah Johnson of Keysville, and his daughter, Miss Vivian McLelland are both members of the Order of the Eastern Star. His three sons, L.E. McLelland of Hephzibah, Hugh McLelland of Augusta and Eben McLelland of Atlanta are members of the Masonic Lodge. He was buried in Hephzibah Friday afternoon with Masonic honors. In 1904 Mr. McLelland passed a civil service examination and was appointed Rural Mail Carrier at Hephzibah R.F.D. No. 1. He retired from this position on December 31, 1935, after thirty years and fifteen days. At the beginning, his route was 24 miles in length and at his retirement it was 54 miles long, and he was serving more than 500 families. He saw many changes take place along his route in those 30 years. He served families of four generations, in all kinds of weather, rain, shine, sleet and snow. One of the most memorable occasions during his service was the flood of October 2, 1929, when all roads and bridges were washed out and the route almost impassable. "Mr. Joe" made a daily detour of 30 miles for an entire month. During the years, he wore out a mail wagon, two buggies, two bicycles, and numerous automobiles. When "Old Dobbin" was sick or a buggy wheel broken down, he would resort to his bicycle, having to walk almost half way around the route, through sandbeds and up hills. During the 30 years he lost only 27 days due to illness. He had a brilliant mind and a remarkable memory and the younger people loved to visit him and hear him relate many interesting incidents of the long ago. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, who lived "just across the street" from him. HE lived a good life, he loved the Hephzibah folk and they loved him, and the entire community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
