George Laing was born on the 1 September 1879 at 6.00pm at 77 Frithside Street, in the Port Town of Fraserburgh, Fraserburgh Parish, at the far northeast corner of Aberdeenshire, Scotland[1]. He was the son of William McLeod and Mary Ann Burnett.
In 1881, George (1) lived with his parents, General Labourer, William (35) and Mary Ann (21); his sister Isabella Rafferty (3); grandmother, Magdalene Birnie (Will) (40); her son James (Will) (9) and Boarder, William (Auld) (23). Their address is 42 Mid Street, Town of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire[2]. His mother, Mary Ann passed away in 1881 and by 1891, his father, William (32), a Farmer Servant lived with second wife, Christina (28) at the Hamlet of Kirktown of St. Fergus, St. Fergus Parish, north of the Town of Peterhead (Aberdeenshire), in Banffshire, Scotland. They lived there with his son George Laing (11) and his and Christina's children, Christina (6), Margaret Ann (6) and James (McLeod) (1)[3].
He enlists in the Royal Navy on the 31 May 1898 at the Royal Naval Barracks (aka H.M.S. Pembroke II), in the Village of Eastchurch, on the Isle of Sheppey, a few miles from the Town of Minster, in Kent, England. His Service number was 288730 and his initial rank was that of a Stoker A.B. After serving for several years, George Laing is discharged on the 9 January 1908 at H.M.S. Pembroke II in the Village of Eastchurch, on the Isle of Sheppey, a few miles from the Town of Minster, in Kent, England (where his service began). His occupation at discharge, was still a Stoker A.B[4]. In 1901, George (21) lived aboard the H.M.S. Vindictive with his crew and officers on the Island of Malta[5]. George married Ada Gladys Hughes on the 6 April 1907 at the Register Office, in the Town of Chatham, Borough of Chatham, Medway District, in Kent, England. George was 26 years old, was a Stoker in the R.N. and lived at H.M.S. Pembroke, in the Town of Chatham. Ada Gladys "Norris" (21), lived at 82 New Road in the Town of Chatham, District of Medway, in Kent, England. Ada's father is recorded as being Colour Sergeant in the Worcestershire Regiment, John (Norris) who was deceased. The couple were married by Registrar, A. J. (Whitehead) and Deputy Superintendent Registrar, Frederick A. (Stigant) in front of witnesses, William (Keint) and Maud (Gervase)[6]. They only had one son:--
However, George and Ada part ways and George passed away on the 10 February 1922, at Rochester (aka St. Bartholomew's) Hospital, New Road, City of Rochester, District of Medway, in Kent, England. The cause of death, according to the Inquest, held on the 14 February 1922, was as follows:--
At the time of his death, George had been living at Navy House, Clover Street, Town of Chatham, in Kent, England[7].
