In 1881, George (1) lived with his parents, General Labourer, William (35) and Mary Ann (21); his sister Isabella Rafferty (3); grandmother, Magdalene Birnie (Will) (40); her son James (Will) (9) and Boarder, William (Auld) (23). Their address is 42 Mid Street, Town of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire[2]. His mother, Mary Ann passed away in 1881 and by 1891, his father, William (32), a Farmer Servant lived with second wife, Christina (28) at the Hamlet of Kirktown of St. Fergus, St. Fergus Parish, north of the Town of Peterhead (Aberdeenshire), in Banffshire, Scotland. They lived there with his son George Laing (11) and his and Christina's children, Christina (6), Margaret Ann (6) and James (McLeod) (1)[3].

He enlists in the Royal Navy on the 31 May 1898 at the Royal Naval Barracks (aka H.M.S. His Service number was 288730 and his initial rank was that of a Stoker A.B. After serving for several years, George Laing is discharged on the 9 January 1908 at H.M.S.
