Note N20William McLeod served with theRoyal Fencible Americans from 1775 to 1783. The records show that he came from St. John's Nfld., and it is said that he previously came from Ireland. The family story is that he came originally from the Isle of Skye in Scotland.
In 1786, after the Revolutionary War, William McLeod joined Captain Guilford Studhols, John Mayes, John Burgess and Thomas Harper in a memorial forc 5000 acres of land in the present arish of Studholm, (which then formed a part of Sussex Parish), with the understanding that he, Hayes, Burgess and Harper would sell their lands to Studholm when they obtained land elsewhere. He presumably lived on this huge tract of land until he obtained a free grant of land at Lower Millstream, in 1804, where he established his home. The McLeod property comprised 640 acres. The son, William McLeod, moved toPenobequis, in 1795, where he purchased to large lots of land.
It is claimed by some of the family that he served with Gen. Wolfe in Quebec.
The Crown grants at the land office in Fredericton refer to him as Lieutenant William McLeod.
