Biography

William McLaughlin was born in 1859 in Leeds, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England.^[1] William was the son of Irish parents, Michael McLaughlin, a Shoe Maker, and Margaret (McHutchin) McLaughlin.^[2]

William was the youngest of at least eight children born to William and Margaret, his siblings were Thomas (c1841), Charles (c1843), Mary Ann (c1845), Joseph (c1848), John (c1852), Francis (c1854), and James (c1857), who were all born in England; Thomas was born in Manchester, in Lancashire, Charles was born in Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and Mary, Joseph, John, Francis, and James, were all born in Leeds.

In 1861 when William was 2 years old he was living on 11 Ebenezer Street, in Leeds, with his father, Michael who was 42 and a Shoe Maker, his mother, Margaret who was 39, and his siblings, Thomas was 20 and Charles who was 18 who were both Shoe Makers like their father, Mary who was 16 and Joseph who was 13 who both worked in Factories, John who was 9, Francis who was 7, and James who was 4 who were all School Students.^[3][4]

Ten years later, in 1871, when William was 12 years old, he was as an Errand Boy, and he was still living on Ebenezer Street but he and his family had moved from number 11 to number 21, with his father, Michael who was 53 and still employed as a Shoe Maker, his mother, Margaret who was 50, and his siblings, John who was 19 and Francis who was 17 were both Shoe Makers, James who was 14 and a Grocer's Assistant, and Mary who was 26, married, and a Shoe Binder, Mary's son, William's nephew, James was 10 Months old.^[5][6]
