Catherine McMahon was born on 14 September 1885 in the Townland of Gowerhass, County Clare, Ireland. She is the daughter of Mortimer McMahon and Anne McInerny[1].
In the 1901 Irish Census, taken on 31 March 1901, Mortimer (Morty) and Anne McMahon are living in the Townland of Gowerhass. Morty is said to be 58 years of age and his occupation is farmer. Morty and Anne's three unmarried daughters, Anne, Susan and Catherine, live in the household[2].
Catherine's mother, Anne McMahon of Gowerhass, 66 year old widow of a farmer, died of "Carcinona (gastric)", on 16 September 1913. Katherine McMahon, daughter of Gowerhass, was the informant[3].
On 19 February 1916, Sinon O'Dea, 35 year old bachelor farmer from Tullabrack, Kilrush, his father James O'Dea (deceased) farmer, married Katherine McMahon, 30 year old spinster of Gowerhass, Kilrush, her father Murty McMahon (deceased) farmer. The couple married at the Roman Catholic Church of St Senan's Kilrush[4].
On 1 April 1969, Catherine O'Dea of Breen Street Kilrush, 84 year old widowed housekeeper, died of shock after an accidental fall. Nancy O'Dea, daughter of Breen Street Kilrush, was the informant[5].
The Clare County Library has donated material including inscriptions from the Kilkeevan (Breaffa) Cemetery donated by Kilrush Youth Centre/ Senan Scanlan[6]. These record,
"Erected by Mrs. McMahon,Gowerhass in memory of her beloved daughter Susan who died on the 16th March 1911 aged 25 years. May her soul R.I.P. Amen. In memory of Sinon O’Dea, Gowerhass, Cooraclare died 4 Dec 1955 his wife Catherine died 1 April 1969"
