Biography

Richard was born on 25 December 1786 at Jonesboro, Washington County, Tennessee.2 He was the son of John Blair(Brooks?) McMahon and Margaret Curley. He was given property by John Blair(Brooks?) McMahon on 20 May 1805 at Logan County, Kentucky, Deed Book A, Page 310.3

Richard was employed at Maury County, Tennessee, on 21 September 1809 as a surveyor.4 He was Bondsman.5 He bought property from Robert McKean in 1812 at Maury County, Tennessee.6 He was the administrator of James McMahon's estate on 20 February 1815 at Maury County, Tennessee.6

He married Mary (Polly) Campbell on 6 June 1815 at Davidson County, Tennessee.7 Richard registered to pay taxes in 1816 at Maury County, Tennessee.8 He sold property to Samuel Doak McMahon on 5 March 1818 at Lauderdale County, Alabama,, 79 acres, (TWP 1S, RNG 9W, Huntsville Meridian) Warrant 456.9 He sold property to Joseph Robinson on 5 March 1818 at Lauderdale County, Alabama,, 79 acres, (TWP 1S RNG 9W Huntsville Meridian).10

He sold property to Thomas Holland on 5 March 1818 at Lauderdale County, Alabama,, 79.69 acres (TWP 1S RNG 9W).11,12 He bought property from an unknown person on 8 August 1820 at Huntsville County, Alabama,, SEC 28, TSP 9, RNG 10W.13

He bought property from an unknown person on 5 September 1821 at Huntsville County, Alabama,, 3 parcels @ 80.14 acres each (Huntsville 9S 10W SEC 28).14 He married Seletha C McKenzie on 27 August 1823 at Lauderdale County, Alabama.15 Richard's will was probated in 1829 at Carroll County, Tennessee. County Court Minutes 2/264.16 Richard died on 16 January 1829 at Carroll County, Tennessee, at age 42.2

He was born December 25, 1786, in Jonesboro (Washington County), TN and died January 16, 1829, in Carroll County, TN. He had two wives. The first was Mary (Polly) Campbell (born ? in AL and probably the sister of Philip Campbell who adopted Margaret McMahan and John N. Alexander).

They married June 6, 1815, in Davidson County, TN. They had three children – Margaret McMahan, John Brooks McMahan(b 1816 TN), and Alexander Campbell McMahan (b 1819 AL). Richard McMahan had a second wife, Teletha (Seletha) C. McKenzie (died 1836 in Carroll County, TN). The second marriage produced a son also named Richard A. McMahan (b 1824).

The parents of Richard McMahan were John Blair McMahan (b. 1754 Frederick County, VA) and Margaret Curlee.[2]
