Mary was born around 1833 (TBC). She was aged 15 when she arrived in Adelaide on the Roman Emperor which carried predominantly young women "orphans" from Irish workhouses escaping from the Irish Famine. She is reported to have come from Castlederg, County Tyrone[1][2]
Castlederg, County Tyrone: The ruins of the castle, built c.1610 by Sir John Davies, Attorney General for Ireland, on the site of an earlier castle, are on the north bank of the Derg, in the townland of CASTLESESSAGH. [3]
The correct spelling of her last name is difficult to ascertain, however McManass appears most likely and is on her marriage record.[4] There are four different spellings in the birth records of her nine children: Mary MCMANASS (5), Mary MCMANAS (1), Mary MCMANNUS (1), Mary MCMANUS (2).[5]
Mary married Edmund Parham (named on the marriage certificate transcription as Edward, but is Edmund on the children's birth records and her death record) on 12 April 1857 at St George church, Gawler.[4]
Mary and Edmund had nine children: Lydia, William, Samuel James, Adeline, Joseph, Silas Felix, Frederick, Catherine Sarah and Emma Ellinor.[5]
Mary died at Gawler River on 2 August 1896 and was reported as being 61 years old.[6][7]
