Biography

JACKSON AND EMILY MCMANUS OF TALBOT CO., GA

Jackson McMANUS (c 1818 GA – ), s/o Robert H. and Mary “Polly” (CANE) McMANUS, is in 1840 Talbot Co., GA near his mother Mary, with ch of ages that fit with dau, Mary and son, Robert or William. On 27 Dec 1835 in Talbot County, Jackson married Emily MANES (c 1817 GA - ) likely the dau of Benjamin and Martha MANES.

In 1850, Jackson and Emily have a large family and one eight year old mulatto slave. Next door is father in law Benjamin MANES with a plantation worked by 18 slaves. Jackson isn’t located on any other census and in 1860, Emily has a newborn and a real estate value of $400 and a personal estate of $2287. If Jackson had died, it had not been long. She had two female mulatto slaves, one fourteen and the other one year. Benj. MANES is next to her with his large plantation and is guardian for two slaves of Eudocia ADAMS.

Civil War soldiers, Jackson McManis, Pvt., Musician, of Co. I, 36th (Broyle's) GA Infantry and J. H. McManis of Co. A, should be evaluated before assuming Jackson had died.

Emily resides west of the Ochlocknee River in Thomasville, Georgia in 1870 with the last five her of their children.

Their children include:

1. Robert Allen ( c1841 GA - ) shows in 1850 and 1860 with Emily.

2. Mary Frances (c1842 GA - )

3. Benjamin William (c May 1845 GA - ) He may be civil war soldier B. W. McMANUS, GA 32nd Inf. Co. B. In 1870 he lived with his mother and was a buggy-maker. He was md twice, first to Ella R. HAYES (c1849 GA - ) on 02 Dec 1875 in Thomas Co., GA by whom he had ch: Bennett H. (c1878 - ) who is recorded as Benjamin H., 23 in 1900 with three lodgers: Henry JONES, Samuel HAYES and William COZART and they all work for the Thomasville City Fire Department. The second child was Allec (c1879 GA - ) gender unknown. Secondly, Benjamin md Emmie B. RICHARDSON on 28 August 1895 in Washington Co., FL and they lived in Cairo, Thomas Co., GA and had ch: Oma, Roscoe and Vern.

4. James Ellis (c1847 GA - ) He is probably J E McMANIEUS, Pvt, Co. C, 5th GA Reserves. He md Mary Vickie BUTLER. In 1912 they were living in Cairo, Grady Co., GA and had two ch: James Jackson (1869 GA - 1934 Plant City, Hillsborough Co., FL) and William Henry (b1875GA – 1940 Grady Co., GA) who had a son, James W. Louie McMANUS.

5. Martha (c1849 GA - ) no further info, may have died young, shows only in 1850 w/ mother.

6. Ann E. (c1850 GA - ) No further info, w/ mother in 1860, ate 10.

7. John W. (c1852 GA - ) w/ mother in 1860 and 1870, not located in 1880

8. Lenora (c1854 GA - ) w/ mother in 1860 and 1870 and 1880 - 6, 16 and 23 respectively.

9. Mongreen (c1859 GA - ) w/ mother in 1860 as Green, 1 and Mongreen 12 in 1870 and 1880 as Green, 21.


McManus Lineage is: Jackson and Emily (Manes) of GA > Robert H. and Mary “Polly” (Cane) of SC and GA > Lt. Hugh McManus and First Wife of Chesterfield District, SC > possibly Thomas McManus of St. David's Parish/Chesterfield District, SC > Capt. James and Mary (Rollings or Parker) McManus of NC and SC.
