Nuclear Family of Charity

Charlotte is first recognized in a court document initiated by her brother Pleasant and mother Elizabeth McManus in 1844. This was a re-partitioning event of the property of her father, Lt. Hugh McManus when he died in 1831 Chesterfield District, SC. [1]

Charlotte is named as wife of Sterling Evans who was the son of William and Mourning (DIGGS) EVANS of Chesterfield District, SC.

Charity would have been exactly 18 years old at the 1844 litigation, yet was acknowledged as a minor - perhaps they considered their ages when Hugh died, they were, in fact, under age in 1831. Charlotte's ages in the only two censuses concur at 24 and 34 yeas in 1850 and 1860. This becomes important in that the children of 1850 number 5, ranging in birth years from 1837 to 1847. The first two may be Evans related children not Charlotte's.

Census

1850 Starlin' and Charlotte Evans' family included James 13; Elizabeth 10, William 9; Emeline 7 and Berry 1. [2] The child James and likely Elizabeth could be other kin.

In 1860 she is again with Starlin' Evans as wife, Charity, 34 and their now chn were William, 16; Emeline 11; Berry L. 10; Sarah A. 8; Lydia J. 7; Queen A 5; L. Morning 3 dau, and Starling L. 2yrs. These children are probably all hers [3]

What is interesting in the first three households of 1860 Household #662 in Winn Parish are three families: Samuel and wife, Martha; Peter Anderson and wife Sarah and then Starling and Charity. Samuel is Charity's brother; Martha is Starling's sister and Peter's wife, Sarah, is Charity's sister.

Death and Legacy

It certainly appears that Charity had a hard and fast young life. After caring for so many others, she died by 1863. This is concluded based on the second wife of Starling and their 1863 first born son, John. Sadly, Charity's brother Samuel died in the civil war in 1862 and her sister Sarah and Peter Anderson seem to have disappeared as well.

Marriage Husband Wife Elizabeth UNKNOWN. Child: Pleasant McManus. Child: Rebecca McManus. Child: Sarah McManus. Child: Charlotte McManus. Child: Samuel McManus. Marriage Abt 1817.
