Biography

Millard was born in 1878. He was the son of Marshall McMaster and Hannah Parker. On 16 June 1880, "Miller" was living with his parents in Albion, Orleans County, New York.[1]

On 13 June 1900, Millard lived with his mother and brothers Arthur, Leslie, and Royal in Canton Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was employed as a tin worker.[2]

Millard was married circa 1901 to Charlotte Martha Bates.

On 21 April 1910, Millard and Lottie and their children Frederick Grelton, Alice Bates, and Arthur Bradley lived at 143 High Street in Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Millard was the assistant superintendent of the Pet Iron Works.[3]

On 12 September 1918, Millard registered for the World War I draft. He was living at 38 Lafayette in Sharon, working at the Petroleum Iron Works Company as its manager. He was reported to be medium height and build.[4]

On 15 January 1920, Millard W. and Lottie B. and their children- Fredric G., Alice F., Bradley A., Helen E., and Catherine E.- lived at 474 Lafayette Street in Sharon. Millard was the manager of a steel works.[5]

By January 1924, the Petroleum Iron Works had opened its Texas headquarters to Beaumont, Texas, with Millard as state agent.[6]

On 3 April 1930, Millard and Lottie and four children- Alice, Bradley, Helen, and Catherine- lived at 3467 Calder in Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas. They owned their home, valued at $10,000, and had a radio. Millard was the manager of an iron works, Alice was a utility company stenographer, and Bradley was an accountant at an utility company.[7]

Millard died on 3 August 1964 at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beaumont from a coronary thrombosis and lobar pneumonia.[8]

"Funeral services for Millard W. McMast, 85, of 2467 Calder, a resident of Beaumont 42 years and one of the city's leading industrialists before his retirement in 1948, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church, 5290 N. Caldwood, with the Rev. Kenneth Thorne, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The body will lie in state at Broussard's Mortuary until 9 a.m. Wednesday when it will be moved to the church.

McMaster died at 11:30 p.m. Monday in Hotel Dieu following a long illness.

A native of Albion, N.Y., he was associated 46 years with the subsidiary companies of the American Republic Corp. He came to Beaumont in May, 1922, as president of Pennsylvania Shipyards after 21 years of service with Petroleum Iron Works in Pennsylvania where he had worked as a plant superintendent.

After five years with the shipyards, he was transferred to Petroleum Iron Works of Texas as vice president and general manager. At the same time he was president of the Gulf Coast Erection Co. which erected the steel for such buildings as the First National Bank and the Edson Hotel of Beaumont and the Gulf Building in Houston.

In 1938, McMaster was made director public relations for the Pennsylvania Shipyards and served in that capacity during the war years, until the yard was sold to Bethlehem Steel Corp. in 1948 when he retired from active business life.

He acted as a member of the Port Commission to achieve proper clearance of railroad bridges for navigation on the Neches River.

McMaster was a director and member of the advisory council of the Intra-Coastal Canal Association, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Beaumont Club and the Rotary Club.

He was also a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Bradley McMaster of Jennings, La.; two daughters, Miss Helen McMaster and Miss Catherine McMaster of Beaumont, a brother Royal McMaster of Huntsville, Ohio and a son-in-law, Clarence Barron of Beaumont."[9]

Millard was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas.[10]
