Homer was born in Indiana, was 32 years old and married. In fact, his father was born in Tennessee - his grandfather in Ireland. Perhaps people who'd fled their homes-turned-battleground were not candid with the US Census.

Homer lived in Grand Island, Hall, NE. where he worked as a freight agent for the St. Joseph and Denver railroad. Grand Island was a Company Town for the Railroad, so his was an important job.

He died after contracting pneumonia while on a trip to help his sister, Abby, whose husband had just died, leaving her with four children to raise.
