(Jan 1900). INQUEST. SUICIDE BY POISON. The death of James Charles M'Meckan, 44, of 39 Neptune-street, St. Kilda, which occurred early on Monday morning under peculiar circumstances, was inquired into by Mr. Candler, City Coroner, at the local court house yesterday. Cissie M'Meckan, a daughter of deceased, stated that her father had recently complained of pains in his head and sleeplessness. At about 2.45 a.m. on the previous day she found him on the floor of his room breathing heavily. Nearby were two glasses, one of which contained cyanide of potassium and the other chlorodyne. Dr. Davenport, who had been summoned to attend deceased, expressed the opinion that the latter had poisoned himself whilst of unsound mind, and a finding to that effect was recorded by the jury.
