Biography

Maud was born about 1880 to William C. and Lottie (Braley) McMillan. I have seen her name as Maud M., Maude, Ella M.and Edna M. and Maud Foster McMillan. In the 1892 New York Census she is listed as Maud M. McMillen. At that time she and her sister Grace lived with her mother and step-father, Willis & Lottie Bishop. The 1900 Federal Census indicates Willis & Lottie had been married 13 years. In the 1905 New York State Census Maud was married to Dascom Allen, Jr. and their son Loran was 5 months old (per his death certificate Loran was born 11 Jan 1905). Dascom and Maud had a daughter names Gladys on 03 Jun 1907. The 1910 Federal Census shows her name as Ella M. Allen and her Husband as Dasken Allen married 5 years. On 11 April 1911 Maud caught fire while trying a new incubator in her home, unable to pull her apron off she ran outside. Her children were outside. Maud is buried in Mount View Cemetery Olean, Cattaraugus County, New York, USA Sec-A-507.

Research Notes

The above are the facts with proof. The following needs more research. According to the newspaper article, "Mrs. Dascom Allen Jr. Victim of Shocking Accident in East Olean" Olean Evening Times 11 April 1911 Page 1 Ancestry.com 23 September 2018, Maud was adopted as a child by Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Foster of Boardmanville, The article states that Mr. and Mrs. William C. McMillan and Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Foster survive her. However, we know Maud's mother, Charlotte Braley was married to Willis Bishop as shown in the 1892 NY census and the 1900 US Census. The article also states Maud had 2 brothers and 1 sister. At the time of Maud's death William McMillan lived in Cherry Creek and James McMillan lived in Sheridan, NY. Grace McMllan's where about's are not listed. On 24 April 1911, a second article, "James McMillan of Sheridan Attend Funeral of his from whom he had long been separated" Olean Evening Times, stated all four children were placed in the Randolph home because of the death of their parents. "In time all four children left the institution." The Randolph Children's Home is currently located at 356 Main Street, Randolph, NY, 14772. "The children's home was founded in 1878. It was a post Civil War orphanage. The Civil War left a lot of children without parents," Brad Sande, development director of the facility, said. "As society developed where orphans were taken care of by relatives or they were adopted, these institutions turned into a place where youngsters that are having trouble adjusting to life can come for help." I found an Ancestry Message Board posting indicating in 1891, Maud's father, William C. McMillan was listed as being from Olean, NY. The Children's Home record does not state if that was his origin or current address. the post also listed her name as Edna. I have attempted to contact this person via e-mail but have not received a response.
