Alexander was born in 1774/775 and baptised at New Luce on 17th January 1775. [1] His parents were Andrew McMillan and Elizabeth Slowan who were tenant farmers in Drumpail, New Luce.
Alexander had a brief liaison with Jean Shaw which resulted in the birth of a son, Alexander McMillan. There are records in the Kirk Session Minutes for New Luce (April 1803) referring to this however the records are difficult to read. Alexander and Jean both appeared before the session several times and there is a clear record for a meeting of the session on 5th June 1803 when 'compeared Jean Shaw for the sin of fornication with Alexr. McMillan in Quarter and was rebuked and absolved from the scandal.' [2].
After this it seems Alexander and Jean went their separated ways with Jean bringing up their child in her home parish of Colmonell.
On 30th June 1810, Alexander married Marion McMillan at Inch in Wigtownshire. [3] It is likely they were related, probably cousins, since Marion's father was also Alexander McMillan. Their first son was also named Alexander McMillan.
New Luce was and still is a rather isolated community with small widespread farms. Alexander farmed Quarter Farm, not far from his father's farm at Drumpail. [4] IN 1841 Alexander was 65 years old and living at Quarter with his family. The name is mistakenly recorded as 'McMillon'.
Alexander died on 27 Jul 1849 ans is interred in the small burial ground in New Luce village. [5]
