Biography

John Boone McMillan was born in Pennsylvania in 1824. He was the son of William McMillan and Margaret (Robb) McMillan. John's father was an original settler of Mercer County, Pennsylvania and served as Justice of the Peace for 40 years. John's father was born in Ireland, and he immigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings in about 1793. John's grandmother died on the voyage to America. John's grandfather was Daniel McMillian, a native of Derry, Ireland. He settled near Pittsburgh.

John's early education took place in a log school house in Wolf Creek, Mercer County, but at age 22, he moved to Clintonville where he apprenticed to his brother, Dr. Andrew J. McMillan. John finished his apprenticeship and began his own practice in 1850.

On August 22, 1851, John married Mary Stewart Phipps, the daughter of Judge David Phipps and Margaret (Stewart) Phipps. They had seven known children. Considering the ten year gap between Mary Almira and Blanche, I would guess that other children were born to John and Mary. The known children were:

  • Andrew Jackson (1853-1932), m. Mary May _____;
  • William (1854-1855);
  • Margaret Phipps (1855-1947), m. William Truby;
  • Sarah Elizabeth (1857-1927), m. William Parker McKee, Sr.;
  • Mary Almira (1859-1935);
  • Blanche G. (1869-1944), m. John Christian Remsburg; and
  • Austa N. (1872-?).

John died in Clintonville, Pennsylvania in 1890 and is buried at the Clintonville M.E. Cemetery.

1870 - Census, 48 years old, living in Clinton Township, Venango, Pennsylvania with wife, Mary (38), and children, Maggie (14), Sarah (13), Elmira (11), and Blanch (9 months). Please note that the Census taker recorded Almira's age as 71. However, he clearly meant 11 (the correct age for Almira at the time of the census). She is recorded on a line between her older and younger sisters, and she is recorded as having attended school within the last year. Such would not have been the case for a 71 year old woman.
