He is listed as a veterinarian in one census and in another a soldier.

His daughter Elizabeth's baptismal record says they were living in the barracks and he was a farrier in the 7th Hussars. The 7th Queen's Own Hussars was a cavalry regiment in the British Army, first formed in 1690. It saw service for three centuries, including the First World War and the Second World War. The regiment was deployed to India in late 1857 as part of the response to the Indian Rebellion.

His oldest daughter Mary Ann was born in Ireland in 1851, his second daughter Elizabeth in 1858 in England, his third daughter Annie in 1862 in India and his youngest daughter Catherine in 1865 also in India. By 1871 they had arrived in Canada.

According to his daughter Elizabeth's marriage record his wife is Mary Thompson. His daughter Elizabeth in the 1901 census states they arrived in Canada in 1871.

The 1881 census says he was born in England although his origins are listed as Ireland. He is a veterinary surgeon.

In 1891 they are in Elderslie Twp., North Bruce Co. and living very close to James and Elizabeth Shaw.

He died at the age of 83 from old age at lot 16, McNaughton St., Wiarton, Ontario and is listed as a soldier.
