Biography

Catherine (McMurray) Mercer was born in Ireland.

Catherine was born in 1848. She married Joseph Edward Mercer who was probably in Boston where he remained after his Civil War stint in the Navy. The two had some children in Boston and then moved back to the area where Joseph's grandfather had originally settled in Maine. She passed away in 1878. She is buried with her husband in Hillcrest Cemetery in Hancock, Maine.

Records indicate her parents were from Ireland, probably Antrim. They may have come to Boston as refugees of the potato famine because there are few records of them. The name McMurray is almost confined to Northern Ireland.

Known children of Joseph Edward Mercer and Catherine Ellen McMurray were as follows: i. John C. Mercer; b. 17 Sep 1868[7] at Hancock, Maine; d. 13 Sep 1869 and buried with his parents.

ii. Edward Henry Mercer; b. 6 Nov 1872[8] at Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts; m. Dora B. Lord, daughter of Llewellyn Lord and Julia Frances McKay, 25 Dec 1897 at East Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; d. 23 May 1961 at Bangor, Penobscot, Maine, at age 88.

iii. Margaret Ann Mercer; b. 24 Oct 1874 at Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts; d. 23 Jan 1924 at Augusta, Kennebec, Maine, at age 49.
