Biography

Helen ("Helena" or "Ellen" in some records) was born in 1841 [1] She was the daughter of Robert McNabb of Sandy Bay. She came to NZ with her parents and family when a very young child. She married John Woolf in 1861 [2] She passed away in 1924 age 83 [3] and is buried at the Riwaka cemetery

Mr. and Mrs. John Woolf, of Motueka celebrated their golden wedding on Tuesday, March 14th. Both are very old settlers in this district, Mr. Woolf having arrived in Nelson by the Martha Ridgway, in 1842, and Mrs. Woolf by the Indus, in 1843. They were married at Motueka on 4th March, 1861. and there are seven sons —Robert, John William, Sydney, Arthur, Verey, Phillip and Hugh—and five daughters—Mrs. Bradley (Riwaka), Mrs. S. Westrupp (Nelson) Mrs D. Stewart (Motueka), Mrs. Vendore (Hokitika) and Mrs. B. Haycock (Sandy Bay)—living. All were present, with the exception of the eldest (who is mate of the Waveriey) and the youngest (who is second officer on one of the Howard Smith Co.'s steamers) sons. Tlie latter was married at Melbourne on 14th inst.—exactly fifty years after his parents. Mr and Mrs Woolf, who were entertained by their children on the anniversary of their golden wedding, were the recipients of many valuable presents, including a silver tea pot from Mr. and Mrs. H. Rankin, a silver and cut glass pickle jar from Mrs Blane, and a silver sugar stand from their children. The celebration was to have taken place at the old home in Sandy Bay but owing to Mr. Woolf's ill health, it took place, at Motuoka, where they have resided for the past three years. There were 10 children, 40 grand-children, and 5 great grand-children present.[4]
