George was born in 1886 in Penetanguishene, Ontario the son of Andrew McNamara and Sarah Gillett. He was married to Florence McLarney in 1919 in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.[1] He was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He mother's name was Sarah.[2]
His Great War records note he had previous military experience with 34th Ontario Regiment.[2] During the Great War he was a player with the 228th Battalion (Northern Fusiliers), Canadian Expeditionary Force Team that played most of a season with the old National Hockey Association.[3] After the 228th, he served in France from Apr 1917, where the 228th Battalion was re-designated as the 6th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops.[2] He demobilised from the CEF as a Major in May 1919.[2]
George and Howard founded the McNamara Construction Company and developed it into a prosperous firm.
McNamara was a member of the 1914 Toronto Blueshirts Stanley Cup champions. McNamara became the coach of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and lead the team to the Allan Cup championship in 1924. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958, after he passed away in 1952.[3]
