John Davidson McNeel was born Oct. 13, 1871 at Bullock's Creek, York County, SC., and is the son of Gustavus Luther and Mary Ellen (Davidson) McNeel and the grandson of Samuel and Elizabeth (Rainey) McNeel of Chester County SC and of John Gillis and Jane (Hamilton) Davidson of York County SC. Samuel McNeel came direct from Scotland to PA and thence to SC. Gustavus L. McNeel was in hospital service in the War of Seccession and was at one time a member of the SC legislature. Mary Ellen Davidson's great grandfather, David Hamilton, came from Scotland to Little York, PA. Between 1760 and 1765, the family moved to SC settling in York District east of the Broad River. Mary Ellen Davidson's great-great grandfather was William Kennedy, a Revolutionary soldier, of whom an interesting account can be seen in Dr. L.C. Draper's Kings Mountain and its Heroes. John Gillis Davidson was a brave Confederate soldier. John D. McNeel attended Davidson College, NC, 1888-1889, SC University, Columbia, SC 1889-1891, graduating in the latter year with a degree in A.B. attended Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, 1891-4 and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1895 with the degree of B.I. He is an attorney and was clerk of the court in Talledega County 1906-1909. He is a Democrat, a Presbyterian and an Elk. He was married October 27, 1897 at Robinson Springs , AL to Adele Goodwyn, the daughter of Albert Taylor Goodwyn and his wife Priscilla Cooper (Tyler) Goodwyn of Robinson Springs. She was the granddaughter of Albert Gallatin Goodwyn a descendant of Captain James Taylor of the Revolution and of Harriet Bibb, niece of Alabama's two first Governors. On her maternal side, she is the granddaughter of Col Robert Tyler, oldest son of Pres. John Tyler and Priscilla Cooper, the daughter of the actor, Thomas A. Cooper. Mr. McNeel served as secretary to Gov. Comer and is now filling the same position for Gov. O'Neal.

McNEEL, JOHN D., lawyer, was born October 13, 1871, at Bullock's Creek, York County, S.C.; son of G. L. and Mary Ellen (Davidson) McNeel, the former a native of Fishing Creek, Chester County, S. C., who lived at Yorkville, S C., saw hospital service in the War of Secession, and was a member of the South Carolina legislature; grandson of Samuel and Elizabeth (Rainey) McNeel, of Fishing Creek, S. C. , the former who came from Scotland to Pennsylvania, and later moved to South Carolina, and of John Gillis and Jane (Hamilton) Davidson, of Bullock's Creek, S. C., the former. a confederate soldier; great-great-grandson of David Hamilton, who came from Scotland before the Revolution. lived at Little York, Pa. between1760 and 1765, then moved to York District, east of Broad River, S. C., and of William Kennedy of Union County, S. C., a soldier in the Revolution. Mr. McNeel attended Davidson College, North Carolina, 1888-1889; South Carolina university at Columbia, 1889-1891, graduating in the latter years with the degree of A. B.; Johns Hopkins university, Maryland, 1891-1894; and was graduated from the University of Virginia, B. L. 1895. He is an attorney; was clerk of the court of Talladega County. 1906-1909; served as private secretary to Gov. Comer, 1911, and filled that position for a few months with Gov. O'Neal, 1913: and in 1914 was appointed U. S. collector of internal revenue tax for the district of Alabama and Mississippi by President Wilson. He is a Democrat; a Presbyterian; and an Elk. Married: October 27, 1897, at Robinson Springs, to Adele, daughter of Albert Taylor and Priscilla Cooper (Tyler) Goodwyn (q. v.) of Robinson Springs; granddaughter of Albert Gallatin and Harriet (Bibb) Goodwyn, the former a descendant of Capt. James Taylor of the Revolutionary Army, the latter the niece of Alabama's first two governors and of Robert and Priscilla (Cooper) Tyler (q. v.). Children: 1. Letitia Tyler; 2. Hulda.
