Biography

Captain Daniel McNeil was born in Lower Little River, Cumberland County, North Carolina in 1752 to Archibald McNeil and Janet Bahn.

Upon the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1775, he sided with the British cause, and for a time served as Lieutenant in the 71st Regiment. He held the rank of Captain in the North Carolina Regiment.

His first known residence in Nova Scotia was Stormount, Guysborough County.

Daniel married in Halifax, Halifax County, Nova Scotia in 1788 to Mary Nutting.

Captain Daniel McNeil acquired by grant in 1794 his "estate" in Cambridge, Hants County consisting of 1000 acres. the property was adjacent to Petite (later named Walton). The land was situated to the south-western shore of the river, it's frontage extending southerly along the shore of the Minas Basin.

Approximately 1798 they moved to the property in Minas Basin and founded the community of Cambridge, named after Cambridge, Massachusetts, the birthplace of his wife.

Although living most of the time in Halifax, Capt Daniel McNeil died of apoplexy at Cambridge on May 5, 1818 at the age of 66. He was buried in the Grant Family burying ground at Loyal Hill, Nova Scotia.

Years later, the Loyal Hill plaster quarry at the beach encroached on the old cemetery. This prompted his grandson, Dr. Daniel McNeil Parker, to have his Grandfather's remains moved to the Parker Family Cemetery at Whale Creek, Walton, Nova Scotia. Captain Daniel McNeill was re-interred beside his two daughters and his many descendants.

There is much more of his life which can be read on-line in Book 1) in sources which may be added at a future date.
