Biography

James Willis McPherson was born in 1824 in Rosewood Township, Kentucky the son of William McPherson (1789–1862) and Mary Ann (Gale) McPherson (1798–1831).

James married Mary Jeanette (Shanklin) McPherson (1827-1901) on 26 Mar 1846 in Winchester, Scott County, Illinois. Their children were:

  1. John Harding McPherson (1848 - 1894)
  2. William Taylor McPherson (1850-1887)
  3. Lucy Jeanette (McPherson) Solomon (1852-1909)
  4. Samuel Withrow McPherson (1853/4 -1944)
  5. Octavia Matilda McPherson (1856/7–1941 )
  6. Mary Francis McPherson (1858-1930)
  7. Lowell Call McPherson (1861– )
  8. Reverend Rudolphus Perry McPherson (1863 - 1931)
  9. Lucius Green "Lou" McPherson (1866–1935)
  10. Nellie G. McPherson (1868/9– )

James passed away in 1890 in Wichita, Kansas and was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.

Barbara McPherson Oliveri Krol notes "HE WAS RAISED IN KENTUCKY and educated in a log schoolhouse. He was married in 1846 to MARY JEANETTE SHANKLIN, Scott Co., Illinois. He started his family in Scott Co., Illinois where his first son was born in 1848, John Harding McPherson. All of his ten children were born in Illinois. He also lived in Macoupin Co., Illinois. The last child was Nellie, born in 1868. He was a farmer all of his working years. In April of 1885, at age 61 he went to Witchita, Kansas ahead of his family to find a place for them. In July, the family joined him in Witchita. He was intelligent, a good businessman and upstanding citizen. He was an Elder while in the town of Palmyra and a Deacon in the Christian Church in Witchita. He bought the first organ in that part of the country. "Sometimes there would be 18 or 20 children around the house and how they made music in the good old times about 1840-1865." [One date given for his death was February 10, 1890. Maple Grove Cemetery give a burial date of October 16, 1891 at the McPherson Family Lot (115-C)."
