↑ TWO WOMEN KILLED. Car Hits Tree At Chertsey Two women were killed instantly when the car in which they were travelling left the Main South road and struck a tree in a plantation, about one mile north of the Chertsey railway crossing at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. They were: Mrs Margaret Alexandrine Goodley, aged about 60, of Gresham street. Geraldine, and her sister: Mrs Enphemla Davidson Bowkett, also of Gresham street, Geraldine. The car, which was driven by Mrs Goodley, was travelling north. The accident occurred when Mrs Goodley attempted to pass a Road Service bus. The right side wheels of the car skidded in the shingle verge of the road and the car apparently went out of control. It broadsided and skidded for about three chains before crashing into the plantation, where it struck the tree. The women are believed to have been killed instantly, and the late model light car was described as a “complete write-off.” Constable R. J. Miller and a doctor from Rakaia arrived on the scene soon after the accident but the two women were dead. Press, Volume XCIX, Issue 29330, 8 October 1960, Page 12
